Description

Flattop architecture differs from traditional chains in a way that matters for shifting performance. Standard chains have rounded link plates that interface with chainring teeth at varying contact points depending on chain angle and tension. SRAM's Flattop design flattens the inner link plates, creating a consistent contact surface that engages chainring teeth at the same point through the entire pedal stroke. The result is quieter operation and more precise shifts, particularly under load when you're accelerating out of corners or pushing up short climbs.

The Rival E1 chain sits in SRAM's Rival groupset tier, using the same Flattop geometry as Force and Red chains but with different surface treatments and pin construction. Where the higher-tier chains use hard chrome plating, the Rival E1 uses nickel plating on the inner and outer link plates. The functional difference shows up primarily in longevity and corrosion resistance rather than shifting performance—new, all three chains shift identically because they share the same dimensional specifications.

Compatibility follows SRAM's 12-speed road ecosystem. The chain works with all Flattop-compatible chainrings, which includes SRAM's road 12-speed cranksets from Rival through Red. It does not work with SRAM's Eagle mountain bike 12-speed system or with any 11-speed or older road drivetrains—the Flattop interface is specific to 12-speed road. The chain requires SRAM's PowerLock connector for installation, with one connector included in the box.... Read More
