Description
Computational fluid dynamics testing shaped the cutout pattern on the Catalyst One disc rotor. SwissStop's engineering team ran thermal simulations to determine how asymmetrical holes affect airflow across the braking surface, then validated those models with laboratory testing before finalizing the design. The result is a one-piece stainless steel rotor that manages heat effectively without the complexity or cost of a two-piece aluminum spider construction. Heat dissipation matters because rotors that retain heat lose braking power over successive stops, and the Catalyst One's design aims to maintain consistent torque even during extended descents or repeated hard braking. The one-piece construction also simplifies installation since there are no rivets or spider interfaces to worry about.
The 1.95mm brake ring maintains consistent thickness across the braking surface, which helps deliver predictable lever feel as the rotor heats up during repeated braking. Rounded perimeter edges on the 140mm and 160mm versions meet UCI approval requirements for road racing, making those sizes appropriate for sanctioned competition. Three small divots machined into each side of the rotor serve as wear indicators, showing when the braking surface has thinned enough to warrant replacement. This is useful information for rotors that see heavy use in wet or gritty conditions where wear rates accelerate.
Both 6-bolt and Center Lock mounting options are available across the size range. The 6-bolt versions can also be adapted to Center Lock hubs using SwissStop's lockring adapter, which provides flexibility if you change wheelsets down the road. Pad compound compatibility covers both sintered and organic options, though SwissStop optimizes the rotor surface for their EXOTherm2 and Disc RS pads. The Catalyst One covers applications from road and cyclocross to cross-country and downhill, with sizes ranging from 140mm through 220mm to match your frame and brake caliper requirements.
