Description
Machined aluminum cups that thread together from opposite sides of the BB shell change how press-fit frames behave over time. Wheels Manufacturing designed the BB30 Outboard Bottom Bracket around this approach, and the result addresses the persistent complaints that come with standard press-fit installations. The cups clamp against each other through the frame rather than relying solely on interference fit, which means the assembly stays put even as the shell material relaxes or temperatures fluctuate. When it's time to service the bearings, you unthread the cups instead of pressing them out, so there's no risk of enlarging the shell with each removal cycle. That matters if you're maintaining your own bikes or running a frame through multiple bearing changes over its lifespan.
The angular contact bearings inside handle the specific load patterns that cranksets generate. Pedaling forces aren't purely radial—they include axial thrust, especially under hard efforts when you're pulling up on one side while pushing down on the other. Standard radial bearings let the balls skate slightly under thrust loads, which accelerates wear. Angular contact bearings position their races to accept both load directions simultaneously, and Wheels Manufacturing sources these cartridges from Enduro. The practical benefit: replacement bearings are available without proprietary sourcing, and swapping them doesn't require specialized extraction tools beyond what most home mechanics already own.
This version fits BB30 shells with 42mm inner diameter, including Specialized frames that use the alloy OSBB standard. The 68mm to 73mm shell width range covers road and cyclocross applications without spacer adjustments. Crank compatibility centers on 24mm spindle diameters, which includes Shimano road and mountain cranks along with other manufacturers that adopted the same dimension. One note on FSA: their MegaExo spindles can measure anywhere from 24.00mm to 24.07mm depending on manufacturing tolerances. If yours lands at the upper end, the bearing inner races won't clear the spindle. Wheels Manufacturing offers replacement bearings with bores sized for 24.07mm spindles if that situation applies to your crankset.... Read More
