Description

Zipp built the 303 XPLR S around a single question: what does a gravel-specific wheelset actually need? The answer, based on the company's aerodynamic and rider testing, was a hookless rim measuring 32mm internal and 40mm external, running wider tires at lower pressures than a road wheel would tolerate. The 303 XPLR S is the tubeless disc rear wheel that carries that philosophy at a price point below the flagship 303 XPLR SW, using an aluminum hub shell and standard J-bend spokes rather than the pricier alternatives above it in the range.

The 32mm internal width matters because it changes what a gravel tire actually does when mounted. A 40mm tire measured on a narrow rim balloons into a light-bulb profile that squirms under cornering load. On the 32mm internal bed, that same tire sits with straighter sidewalls, holds its shape through corners, and can be run at pressures that would feel dangerously low on a road-width rim. Zipp's published pressure recommendations for the XPLR platform reflect this — the wheels are designed around the assumption that gravel riders benefit more from a supple, low-pressure contact patch than from the highest possible tire pressure.

Hookless bead construction sets a hard rule: tubeless-only, and only with tires validated for hookless use. The ETRTO-compliant bead seat locks tires at pressures up to 72.5 psi, which is more than enough headroom for any gravel setup and comfortably above what most riders will ever run on 40mm-plus rubber. Before installing tires, confirm the manufacturer lists them as hookless-compatible — Zipp maintains a compatibility database, and most current gravel tires from major brands qualify. Clincher setups with tubes are not supported.... Read More
