Description
Gravel wheels face a fundamental tension between aerodynamic efficiency and the wider tire clearances that off-road riding demands. Zipp's 303 XPLR S addresses this with a 32mm external width optimized for tires in the 35mm to 50mm range—wide enough to support high-volume rubber without the balloon effect that occurs when narrow road rims meet gravel tires. The hookless bead design creates a smoother interface with tubeless tires, allowing lower pressures without the pinch flat risk that hooked rims introduce at the bead seat.
The 303 XPLR S rear wheel uses Zipp's ZR1 hub platform, which employs a star ratchet engagement system with 66 points of engagement. That translates to less than six degrees of rotation before the hub catches, which matters when you're accelerating out of loose corners or powering over technical sections where momentum preservation is everything. The freehub body accepts SRAM XDR cassettes, covering the extended range options that gravel riding typically requires.
Rim depth sits at 35mm, which provides meaningful aerodynamic benefit without creating the handling instability that deeper sections introduce in crosswinds. For gravel riders who transition between pavement, packed dirt, and exposed ridgelines, this depth offers a workable compromise. The Total System Efficiency concept Zipp developed considers the wheel and tire as a single aerodynamic unit, and the 303 XPLR S rim profile was shaped specifically around the wider tires it's designed to carry....
