Description
Gravel wheels face a fundamental design tension: go wide enough for volume and compliance, or stay aerodynamic enough that pavement sections don't feel like a penalty. Zipp's 303 XPLR SW splits that difference with a 32mm external width that supports tire sizes from 35mm up to 50mm while maintaining a rounded profile that slips through air more efficiently than box-section alternatives. The hookless bead design works exclusively with tubeless setups, allowing lower pressures without risking tire burp or bead unseating on rocky descents.
The SW designation places this wheel in Zipp's top tier, sharing the same rim construction and profile as the 303 S but upgrading the hub internals. ZR1 hubs use oversized Zipp-branded ceramic bearings that reduce rotational friction at cruising speeds, and the driver mechanism delivers quick engagement for responsive acceleration out of corners or when punching up short climbs. The front hub spaces at 12x100mm for thru-axle frames and centers a six-bolt rotor mount for disc brake compatibility.
Rim depth sits at 45mm, deep enough to provide aerodynamic benefit on exposed roads but not so deep that crosswinds become unmanageable on open gravel routes. The ABLC dimple pattern across the rim surface—borrowed from Zipp's road racing development—helps reattach airflow along the trailing edge, reducing drag compared to smooth carbon surfaces. Weight lands at 585 grams for the front wheel alone, competitive for a rim this wide and deep.... Read More
