Description

Gravel racing has pushed rim widths into territory that would have looked absurd a few years ago, and Zipp's 303 XPLR SW sits at the leading edge of that shift. The wheel pairs a 32mm internal rim width with a 40mm external dimension , a 54mm depth , and a hookless bead design built around a specific premise: start with the tire and design the rim to disappear behind it. The Total System Efficiency approach means the rim profile, hub internals, and spoke geometry were designed as a unified system rather than assembled from separate engineering exercises.

The ABLC Sawtooth dimple pattern across the rim's outer surface reduces aerodynamic drag at the yaw angles riders actually experience on gravel roads, where crosswinds hit the wheel at unpredictable angles rather than the controlled laminar flow of a wind tunnel. At average race speeds of 29-36 kph, Zipp's internal testing found 2-watt savings from aerodynamic gains compared with a peer wheel, with the advantage growing to 10 watts or more when speeds exceed 53 kph on descents and other fast sections. Hookless construction eliminates the stress concentration points where traditional hooked beads meet the rim wall, allowing the bead to seat uniformly around the full circumference.

There's one critical caveat that needs surfacing before the build details: the 303 XPLR SW is only compatible with approved tires, with the Goodyear XPLR Slick and Goodyear XPLR Inter specifically designed and optimized for this rim. The approved list has been expanding to include select Schwalbe, Pirelli, and Zipp Tangente options, but this is not a wheel where any tubeless gravel tire will work. Check the current compatibility list before committing to a tire choice. The approved tires must also be 40mm or wider — narrower tires cannot be used on this rim.... Read More
