Description
Gravel wheels face a fundamental tension between weight and durability that most manufacturers resolve by picking a side. Zipp's 303 XPLR SW splits the difference through engineering rather than compromise—a 25mm internal width that handles tires from 35mm up to 50mm, paired with a hookless bead design that actually benefits from lower pressures rather than fighting them. The Total System Efficiency approach means Zipp designed the rim profile, hub internals, and spoke geometry as a unified system rather than assembling parts from different engineering teams.
The ABLC Sawtooth dimple pattern across the rim's outer surface reduces aerodynamic drag at the yaw angles you actually experience on gravel roads, where crosswinds hit the wheel at unpredictable angles rather than the controlled laminar flow of a wind tunnel. That textured surface also sheds mud and debris more effectively than smooth carbon, which matters when you're hours into a ride and tire sealant has coated everything below the seatpost. Hookless construction eliminates the stress concentration points where traditional hooked beads meet the rim wall, allowing the tire bead to seat uniformly around the full circumference.
Zipp built the ZR1 hub specifically for the demands of gravel racing and endurance riding. The 66-tooth ratchet driver delivers 5.45 degrees of engagement—fine enough that you're never hunting for the pedal stroke when accelerating out of corners or over technical features. Ceramic bearings reduce rolling resistance at the hub shell, though the real-world benefit shows up more in longevity than speed. The rear wheel uses Zipp's XDR freehub body, compatible with SRAM 12-speed cassettes that range from 10-tooth to 10-52T depending on your gearing preferences.... Read More
