If your choice for a perfect ride involves miles, a willingness to explore a little off the beaten track, all weather capability, and a quick recovery to do it all over again tomorrow, you must take a look at the Cervelo C3 Ultegra R8020 Disc Bicycle. Built for comfort, performance and all day enjoyment, the C3 accepts road tires up to 32mm (with a fender if desired), features hydraulic disc brakes, and still rides with the elan of a race-level bike, without the aggressive posture. Cervelo has taken their years of R3 engineering and rider experience, applied to any Endurance class bicycle frame, and evolved it to meet your ideal needs. So if you plan on a few long benefit rides a year, manage to jump into a gran fondo, or simply log hours and miles every weekend from April through October, the C3 may just prove to be the best design on the market. Equipped here with an 11-speed double Ultegra R8000 series hydraulic disc brake group, DT wheelset, and lightweight Cervelo cockpit, the overall value and performance you can expect from this bike will be measured in smiles and personal satisfaction.
For Cervelo developing a frameset begins with expected rider usage. The C-series bikes are the Canadian company's Endurance bikes. Built for compliance, positional comfort, balanced riding performance, and more mixed-surface capability than a standard road bike, the C-series is engineered to those requirements. Cervelo's Squoval tubesets seen in the R-series bikes have gone through their own evolution, and a new version was created for the C3. Named Squoval IPC, the tubes follow the same general shapes of the Classic version, but move the fore-aft surfaces closer to the neutral axis to improve in-plane compliance. Got that? Essentially the tubes were redesigned to offer greater vertical compliance, without compromising lateral stiffness or adding much weight. This is driven by the ideal user requirements. The C3 is still plenty stiff laterally from the oversized BBright bottom bracket junction and chainstays, as well as the cross sections of Squoval IPC, but is more forgiving vertically. It doesn't feel soft or bouncy, it just happens. If you run lower volume tires at at higher pressure the effect is tangible, if not obvious. Of course the squared oval (Squoval) tube shapes were also optimized or some aerodynamic benefit over pure round or more squared tubes, so you don't lose frame efficiency there either.
The application of disc brakes and thru-axle use affords the engineers the ability to create stiffer, stronger junctions at light weight. Now, having lost the traditional brake bridge and widened the rear spacing (142mm), the engineers deliver room for 32mm tires and a road fender system. The all carbon tapered disc fork for the C3 benefits from the same advantages, but maintaining a 100mm dropout, albeit for a 12/100mm thru-axle. The fork is designed with visually subtle asymmetry to counter the forces of the Flat Mount disc calipers, and features internal routing for clean visual and aero frontal zone. Both the front and rear Flat Mount caliper mounts can handle 140 or 160mm disc rotors, and comes buitl with 160mm. As the fork is asymmetric, with the development of Squoval IPC for the C3, you can see the curved, thin rear seat stays also have differing shapes. Again the disc forces are a factor here, as is the need for a more direct effect for power transfer on the driveside. The actual curves reflect the specific needs of each side of the drop out, not some random aesthetic.
We build a lot of Cervelo's and though with all varying drivetrain systems and types a mechanic's life can be stressful, the ease and flexibility of the FutureProof cable management system and the large Reduced Friction BB guide simplify the process and keep the design clean and efficient no matter what cables or wires one needs to run. Everything on a Cervelo is thought through and engineered for the best possible results.
Little needs to said about the Ultegra R8000 drivetain. Simply put: best performance, reliability, wear, and efficiency for the money, period. Cervelo specs the 11-speed 50-34 crankset, 11-30 cassette, chain, braze-on front and SS rear derailleur all from the R8000 group. Due to the 79mm asymmetric BBright design, a Cervelo BBright Connect 24x90 bottom bracket is used. The Dual Control levers are the mechanical shift, hydraulic brake R8020 models. The hydraulics power the R8070 Flat Mount Disc Calipers, which apply force to the Ultegra RT-800 160mm Center Lock disc rotors, which feature IceTech sandwich construction technology. These are used to control the DT Swiss E1800 32mm profile disc brake wheels. With a 20mm internal rim width, these smooth rolling, durable wheels easily carry the supplied Continental Grand Prix 700x28mm clincher tires.
Cervelo has really stepped up their component line. The round 27.2mm diameter SP-19 Carbon Seatpost is perfect for the sloping C3 frameset, and it carries the popular and forgiving Fizik Antares VS saddle. The front half of the cockpit features Cervelo's Ultra Light Alloy Stem and AB07 Ultra Light Alloy Bar, as well as their standard bar wrap. The build truly suits the C3 frameset and as you can see there are no cheap compromises to be found. The entire package is designed to inspire you as you put the 2019 C3 Ultegra R8020 Disc Bicycle through it's paces. Even the new paint and finish scheme suit the ethos of the C3 design. Now all you have to do is experience it.
