Maxxis Crossmark EXO TR Tubeless Tire
It has been nearly a decade since you could take in a national or World Cup XC race and not seen the Maxxis Crossmark gracing a slick pair of racing wheels. The essential tread pattern has been tweaked several times, and as rubber compunds have advanced, more knob shaping and ramping is obvious, but the Crossmark design has been a top performing XC race tire for a long time. In this new EXO Tubeless Ready version, those of us who love a fast rolling tire with just enough grip can ride the Crossmark every day in a variety of conditions. The near continuous center knob set-up is incredibly fast on hardpack and semi-soft terrain, and even holds its own in loose over hardpack conditions. It has always been surprising how the Crossmark manages to grip on roots and rocks, even when wet, but there are just enough ridges and spaces on the center tread to make it possible. Now with the advantage of tubeless capability and EXO sidewall protection, the ability to run slightly lower pressures only increases traction.
Cornering has also been improved, with the ramped intermediate knobs setting the line, as the raised ridges of the outside knobs offer more surface to conform and hold it down. This dual compound tire takes full advantage of the durometer knowledge Maxxis has built over the years of sponsoring hundreds of racing cyclists. With a slightly firmer, yet still tacky, rubber in the center, you get low rolling resistance and better wear, and the softer rubber found in the outside knobs delivers grip at cornering speeds you have to rail to believe. Now, don't get us wrong, the Crossmark is still a fast XC tire, so keep that in mind. It is great on hardpack and slick rock, and can handle loose over hard as well by dropping a few psi's. The grip in semi-soft dirt is better when the tire is firmer, making it an excellent choice for trails, courses, or short tracks that feature packed dirt. Like any tire designed specifically for XC racing, you have to understand the purpose of the Crossmark to really trust and enjoy it, but we feel the Crossmark EXO TR has crossed the finish line and continued onto the trail on 100mm travel hardtail and FS bikes.
