Description

Wet-weather commuters and Pacific Northwest mountain bikers have passed around the same advice for decades: when lighter lubes wash off after one rainy ride, reach for Phil Wood Tenacious Oil. The name describes the behavior. This high-viscosity formula grips metal surfaces and stays put through rain, slush, mud, and road salt that would strip lighter lubricants in a single outing. Phil Wood has sourced the base oil from the same independent California refinery since 1971, then blends rust inhibitors and extreme-wear additives at their San Jose facility before bottling.

The tradeoff is straightforward: that tenacious grip also catches dust and road grit in dry conditions, turning your chain black faster than a dry lube would. If you're riding exclusively in fair weather, this isn't your product. But if your rides include creek crossings, winter commutes, or any conditions where water and grime are constants, the Tenacious Oil delivers protection that outlasts multiple rides before needing reapplication. Apply a drop to each roller, let it penetrate, and wipe off the excess to minimize fling.

Beyond chain duty, the oil handles derailleur pivots, cable friction points, freehub pawls, and pedal threads. Mechanics use it to free up rusted freewheels and freehub bodies that no longer engage properly. The squeeze bottle with applicator tip lets you place oil precisely without flooding components, and a 4oz bottle lasts through a full season of regular use. Phil Wood designed their lubricants to complement their own hubs and bottom brackets, so if you're running their components, this is the maintenance oil they had in mind.

I started using Phil Wood in 1975. I just bought the tenacious oil and I would agree that it does a much better job at lubricating the chain than the dry type of lubes especially if you are riding long distances and in varying weather conditions. Yes the chain may get a little road grime, but a cotton cloth after a long ride does the trick. I clean the chain, chain rings and cassette about once every 3 months and re-lube and I have not had a problem especially living here in Florida.

This is one of the best chain oils and general purpose oils available. It is thicker, and will get dirty and black, but it lasts and lubricates. It will totally silence your chain. For cleanliness, just wipe the dirty chain down with a solvent-wetted rag; apply one drop of tenacious oil per link, then wipe off the excess with a dry rag. It will not stay as clean as the modern dry lubes, but it will lubricate SO MUCH BETTER. I just couldnt stand the dry lubes that wont even last 100 miles (I have tried them all.) If they figure a way to make it stay clean, I will give it 5 stars.

Phil Wood Tenacious Oil is by far the best chain lube available. It is a high viscosity oil which will produce a quiet chain and is far better than the thinner lubricants which almost act as cutting oils when mixed with road dirt.

I’ve experimented with a variety of lubes for the chain and I’m convinced that Phil Wood Tenacious oil is the best. Smooth quiet shifting. I apply it while the chain is off the bike one drop per link. Wipe off the excess .

Great stuff works very well it is also a very good chain lube as well, just go light on it. One drop per link and wipe off the excess sticks very well and lasts forever. I have used pro link pro gold in the past and I prefer the Phil Wood oil over any other lubricant I have used and it is cheaper than most.
