Description
SmartNET Silica compound separates Pirelli's P Zero Race TLR 4S from the standard Race TLR. Where the regular model uses SmartEVO compound optimized for dry-weather speed, the 4S formulation prioritizes wet grip and cold-weather traction through elongated silica particles that interact more favorably with water. The silica molecules arrange systematically rather than chaotically within the rubber matrix, creating consistent material properties that translate to reliable handling when conditions deteriorate. This compound technology originated in Pirelli's motorsport division and represents their highest-grip formulation for road cycling applications.
The "4S" designation signals year-round capability without the typical compromises of dedicated winter tires. This tire bridges the gap between heavy-duty cold-weather rubber and lightweight summer race tires, delivering enough grip for wet descents and cold morning rides while maintaining rolling characteristics that won't penalize you on dry days. If you're running one wheelset through all seasons rather than swapping between summer and winter setups, the 4S eliminates that compromise of feeling slow on fair days or sketchy when it rains. The compound warms up readily even in cooler temperatures, maintaining grip when other tires feel stiff and unpredictable.
SpeedCORE casing construction carries over from the standard Race TLR, using Pirelli's 120 TPI tubeless-ready design with an aramid-infused air-tight layer covering the tire's interior. This construction provides mechanical resistance and improved air retention while remaining supple enough for low rolling resistance. The aramid particles distribute evenly throughout the rubber compound, creating consistent protection without stiff spots that would compromise ride quality. An additional aramid belt sits beneath the tread for puncture protection, contributing to the 4S's heavier weight compared to the standard model but adding durability that makes sense for a tire intended for year-round duty on variable road surfaces....
