SpeedCORE construction rethinks how a tubeless road tire handles air retention and puncture resistance. Rather than applying a separate bead-to-bead barrier layer — the approach most manufacturers use — Pirelli infuses aramid particles directly into the rubber compound lining the inside of the P Zero Race TLR's 120 TPI casing. This keeps the casing supple and flexible throughout rather than developing the stiff spots that concentrated aramid belts tend to create, and it allows the tire to perform at lower pressures without a corresponding loss in ride quality. An additional anti-puncture aramid breaker woven into the casing provides a second layer of protection. Every tire comes out of Pirelli's Bollate factory near Milan — the first road cycling tire with tubeless technology manufactured entirely in Italy.
SmartEVO compound covers the contact patch using a three-polymer formulation Pirelli developed through decades of motorsport work. Each polymer contributes a different characteristic to the blend — the combination targets grip in varied conditions, low rolling resistance, and durability for high-mileage use without requiring race-day-only treatment. In independent lab testing, the Race TLR consistently ranks near the top of the road tire category for wet grip. It isn't the fastest-rolling tire in Pirelli's current road lineup — the RS model strips tread and casing material to improve rolling efficiency at the cost of durability — but the Race TLR emphasizes puncture resistance and service life over peak rolling efficiency. For riders who want a single tire covering training miles, group rides, and race efforts without rotating setups, the compound's all-round balance is where the range's value sits.
Tubeless setup uses standard procedures with sealant, and the bead seats on tubeless-ready rims without a compressor in most cases — a practical consideration given that these tires mount tight on the bead. Air retention holds well after initial setup: riders report minimal pressure loss between rides, which matters more for a daily training tire than for a race-day wheel pulled out fresh. The 28mm and wider sizes run on hookless rims subject to ETRTO 5 bar/73 psi maximum pressure limits; the 26mm requires a hooked bead rim.
