Ritchey Break-Away WCS Carbon Road Frameset

Ritchey's Break-Away travel bikes are world renown for their unique blend of travel convenience and no-compromise performance. Other travel bikes leave a lot to be desired and are more suited to short errands. The well proven Break-Away concept lets you bring a great riding bike that rides just like a regular road bike in a travel case that is only 8.5"x26.5"x31" - the size of a large suitcase. For comparison, a full size bike box or travel case is much larger and more cumbersome at 50"x30"X10". Ritchey can't promise what the airlines will charge, but the cost difference of a checked suitcase versus a bike travel fee has the potential to save hundreds of dollars.

The Break-Away Carbon frameset allows the ride quality, lightweight and stiffness only a full carbon frame can deliver in a travel convenient model. Of course the big question is a carbon fiber frame really ideal for travel. Ritchey has offered a Ti-Carbon BreakAway with a full carbon rear triangle for years without issue. Ritchey uses a very strong carbon fiber design. This design is so strong the force required to damage it would damage any other frame material. Tom Ritchey has made frames over three decades with an impeccable history of being very light but having virtually no warranty issues.

Combining the genius of Tom Ritchey's design skill with carbon is a match made in heaven. Working with carbon fiber makes it easy for Tom Ritchey to design a tubeset from the ground up with careful attention to durability, stiffness and ride quality. Ritchey uses Right-Sized carbon tubing with the goal of balancing stiffness and compliance for a sublime ride quality across all frame sizes.

The seat post clamp and compression coupling by the bottom bracket are the keys to the Break-Away design. The frame securely grips the seatpost in two places and joins the upper portion of main triangle to the rear. On the downtube, nearly at the bottom bracket shell, the compression coupling forms the lower connection for the front and rear triangles. The coupler clamps unobtrusively around small flanges on the downtube.

This simple and effective design adds less than 100 grams to the frame. Only a 4mm and 5mm Allen wrench and the removal of two bolts are required to take apart or assemble the frame. Cables are separated with these easy to use cable splitters.

The more I ride this frame, the more I love it. I built it with SRAM etap and Ritchey WCS carbon wheels (with the phantom flange hubs) for the ultimate transportability. This bike is every bit the equal to other high end carbon bikes I've owned: Colnago C50, Cannondale SuperSix Evo Hi Mod, etc. As far as ride characteristics, it's stiff where it needs to be and there's NO indication it's a coupled bike. The handling is crisp, predictable and precise. The rear will accommodate a 28 tire, but the front fork only allows a 25 (maybe a 26). The styling is great, but that's personal. Even for those who don't travel, this is an A bike. For those who do, the portability of it is a bonus. Highly recommend.
