Pioneer Dura Ace 9100 Power Meter Crankset
Pioneer's dual leg power meter system measures and transmits an extraordinary and diverse amount of data. Pre-installed here on a new Shimano Dura-Ace 9100 Crankset, the incredible power measurement device will escalate and refine your knowledge and understanding of how a power meter can change the way you train, race, and even optimize your bike fit. You get perhaps the best shifting, best power transfer, and best measurement system in one unit that is straightforward to install, set-up/pair, and perform daily zero calculation on. Equipped with temperature compensation, easy to replace CR2032 batteries, private channel ANT, and ANT+ communication, the Pioneer Dual Leg Power Meter can be used with Pioneer's head units or most Garmins, and other ANT+ head units that can provide you with the essential data, even right-left leg balance (so long as the unit's firmware supports this feature).
How does Pioneer generate so much definitive data? First, each crank arm has it's own strain gauge power measurement system. Data is measured every 30°, or twelve times in every full crank revolution, independently on each arm. The strain gauge systems are highly sensitive devices, and accuracy is within +/-2%. However, within those 12 collection points per revolution, Pioneer also scans those pedaling forces an incredible 16 times, for an unbelievable 192 data points each rotation of the crank- on each arm. A comprehensive analysis of power throughout the stroke is possible, allowing the user to truly evaluate how to improve both power and efficiency through balancing the right/left leg effort and understanding weakness within the stroke itself on each side. Pioneer offers their comprehensive HD Power Metrics with Pedaling Monitor Mode when using a Pioneer head unit, which shows real time pedal stroke measurement every 30 degrees. The data itself is collected regardless of what head unit you use, but a private ANT connection is used with the Pioneer head unit and that connection is the only way to get the full stroke analysis data in real time, with a Pioneer SGX-CA500 or SGX-CA900 GPS cycle computer. You still get a basic breakdown of efficiency and all standard power data options with a standard ANT+ head unit: power, average power, % of FTP, power within zone, training intensity, normalized power and all normal cycling stats- speed, cadence, distance, time, temp, etc.- over 100 data options to choose from.
Why is this level of pedal stroke data useful? Isn't it enough to just have basic double leg information? Well, that depends on your level of commitment to being the most efficient cyclist you can be. Efficiency is achieved through your bike fit, your cadence, your heart rate, your ankle angle when pedaling, cleat position, and on and on. HD Power Metrics can help determine bike fit, proper cadence for your fitness level- as well as how to train to be stronger and raise or lower your cadence to maximize your heart rate zones, and capacity. Simply understanding exactly where your stroke is deficient, and training that away is crucial. Even the most experienced cyclists can learn from this analysis. Your off season work, especially on a stationary bike, can be incredibly focused as you drill to improve your left-right balance, as well as the complementary power on both sides throughout the full pedal stroke.
Whether you choose a Pioneer or outside head unit you can have access to all the data off the bike. A comprehensive cloud-based web platform, called Cyclo-Sphere, lets you analyze up to 199 different data points so you have comprehensive knowledge of every moment of every ride. Simply upload your ride data to Cyclo-Sphere to analyze total power, power in each leg, force vectors, torque vectors, pedaling efficiency, heart rate, speed, cadence, distance, altitude, temperature, and much more. The site allows you to convert and share with all of the major training platforms: Training Peaks, Strava, Golden Cheetah, etc. While the Cyclo-Sphere site may not be as user-friendly as modern app's, once you start using it, you will find real flexibility and the capability to analyze, sort, and show your data is impressive. Once you decide how you want to evaluate your information, you can build user-friendly dashboards with exactly what you want to see, and the ability to dig deeper. You can store all the data in the cloud, for free, making it accessible from any web-enabled device.
Once your Double Leg Power Meter crankset is installed back on your bike, all you have to do is sync with your ANT head unit. The pre-ride zeroing process is simple. Should you opt for a Pioneer head unit, firmware updates, and ANT channel selection is direct through that unit. The drive side pod, located within the chainring assembly has simple hex key bolts which you remove to access the CR2032 battery, and a manual switch for ANT+, or ANT private (Pioneer Cyclo-Computers only). The left side arm has more watch-like battery compartment for easy replacement when necessary. Now you are ready to get the most definitive power measurement training possible. Pioneer has made a huge commitment to cycling and has worked with several top pro teams to develop and refine this excellent system, and now any Shimano 11 speed crankset user can get double leg power measurement and analysis at a great value.
