Niner JET 9 Carbon X1 Bike
If flying over trails with confidence is your preferred outdoor activity, the Niner Jet 9 Carbon can certainly provide the motivation and capability. Built here with an Excel Sports kit featuring SRAM X1, Shimano XTR brakes, NoTubes ZTR Arch MK3 29er wheels and Rock Shox Pike 120 RCT3 Fork, you will have a fully capable trail machine with spec'ed far better than any OEM build for for the money.
When Niner developed the current JET 9 RDO, and dropped the full alloy Jet 9, they reconfigured the JET 9 carbon to deliver the benefits of the carbon main triangle at a lower, more accessible price point. In order to do this, a new, lighter aluminum alloy rear triangle was mated to the carbon main. The addition of mounts to the carbon front triangle for an externally routed dropper post actually makes this model more appropriate with a 120mm fork for more technical trail and descents. You can feel good knowing that Niner understands the requirements and rider choices that drive the JET 9 Carbon. Small details matter, but from a strictly practical perspective, the popularity of the JET series starts with the suspension.
Niner's patented 29er specific suspension design is call CVA, for Constantly Varying Arc travel and has been optimized for the JET The lower pivot sits under the bottom bracket, creating an instant center location in front of the BB. A dual linkage system then reacts with counter force to suspension load. This essentially isolates the drivetrain from the suspension, maintaining pedaling efficiency throughout the travel range, regardless of the chainring/gearing combination, and basically eliminating the snap-back that can occur with many suspension designs as the suspension unloads. Sag setting is crucial, because just past sag, the axle path moves inward, with a constantly varying arc, limiting chain growth throughout the travel range. That is a lot of technical talk, but CVA works exceptionally well, and takes full advantage of the 29er platform. Travel is smooth and efficient, driven by a CVA specific Rock Shox Monarch RT air shock. The simple, efficient Monarch RT is a high volume shock with plenty of compression adjustment. The Fast Black piston coating keeps the shock gliding effortlessly. Niner makes all it's own excellent hardware, and the linkage is made from high pressure molded carbon.
The Jet 9 Carbon frameset maintains the sleek carbon front triangle, and delivers a smooth confident ride. The oversized head tube junction and bottom bracket ensure torsional rigidity. Rear derailleur housing is routed internally through the carbon frame, and externally on the rear. Niner provides a guide tube for the front derailleur cable, and the rear brake housing sits externally. You pay a small weight penalty for the new alloy rear triangle, but you gain the 142/12 rear drop out and thru-axle. When combined with the stout construction and molded carbon linkage, the frame becomes laterally stiff and super strong, providing a consistent feel from the front to the rear. The post mount rear brake is standard and ensures excellent, well aligned set-up.
The Pike RCT3 Solo Air 120 is a trail proven fork that features the tunable 3 position Charger Damper, 35mm Fast Black stanchions, magnesium lowers and the 15mm Maxle Lite system. The Solo Air system keeps air management simple by filling both positive and negative chambers with perfect equilibrium. Fork set-up is simple, and the Solo Air design requires less frequent service intervals. The travel is smooth and plush, and you have the ability to truly tune the settings to your riding preferences.
We are fans of the all-black look of the SRAM X1 drivetrain, but we love the strong, yet smooth and reliable shifting and drive performance. The Direct Mount 32T X-Sync chainring is perfectly mated with the alloy BB30 crankset. Shifting is handled by the ergonomic X-Actuation right shifter, which drive the performance of the X-Horizon rear derailleur via the PC-X1 chain to the 10-42 MiniCluster XD Driver cassette. Though SRAM's hydraulic brakes have advanced to the highest levels, we opted for the light weight, incredible power and unmatched modulation of the Shimano XTR M985 Trail hydraulic brakeset. The 6-bolt rotors are the standout XT RT86 IceTech model, 160mm front and rear.
The brakes supply the power and control required to manage the speed and substantial contact patch of the NoTubes ZTR Arch MK3 29er wheelset. With a 26mm inner rim width and industry leading tubeless performance, the Arch MK3 is incredibly strong and responsive, at just 1770 grams. We choose the Maxxis Ardent EXO TR 2.4" tires for their versatile performance and perfect width match of the Arch MK3. To control the front wheel and the bike as a whole, Easton supplies the Haven Alloy 20mm Lo-rise bar, Haven Alloy Seatpost, and Haven stem. The WTB SL8 Team saddle's titanium rails carry you securely, is easy to maneuver with and works well for many body types. Sweet silicone grips from Supacaz finish the build, delivering exceptional grip and feel in wet or dry conditions.
Niner has found a great balance between climbing, tracking, and pedaling efficiency, with solid downhill manners, all in a lightweight, smooth riding frameset. Look, not everyone can pony-up for the RDO version, but not only do you not sacrifice much, but the overall build specification is the same one we often build the RDO version with. The Jet 9 Carbon X1 is fast, responsive, stable, and smooth. Just like you.
