Cervelo P3 Rim Frameset 2017

For 2018 the Cervelo P3 Rim Frameset was designed and engineered into its current form capturing the essence and very real aero features of the P5 superbike design yet it also bears all the lessons learned that have made the P3 in all of it's previous iterations the most raced triathlon bike of all time. Few, if any other, bike companies can match Cervelo's overall aerodynamic success stories in true event bikes or aero road for that matter. The P3 features superior aerodynamics, built into a highly practical event frameset that carries fairly standard component requirements and essentials that make the P3 as tri-friendly as possible for everyday multi-sport athletes- the competitive age groupers, ascendant youngsters, and those who love the physical challenges of triathlon, but don't have sponsors or a team of professionals supporting them. As the frameset is also UCI compliant, it is also a great option as a time trial bike for non-specialists or those just starting out and learning to adapt to the aero position and physiological requirements of a max effort TT before investing in a higher end model. The P3 frameset is offered in six sizes with 700c wheels from the massive 61cm down to a 48cm. For smaller riders the 45cm model is offered, with the smaller 650c wheels.

The P3 was designed engineered for ease of use, set-up, fit, and overall value. The proven aerodynamics of the tube shapes and design features serve to reduce drag and improve overall efficiency. Cervelo applies several major features drawn from both the P5 and S5 designs, such as the Extended Seattube Cutout which blends air cleanly around the rear wheel, shielding the tire from any leading edge into the wind. The Shielding Seatstays build off from the seattube and ease the air over and around the standard rear rim brake mount, essentially taking dirty air, then smoothing it over what has traditionally been a true problem area. These rear triangle enhancements are fully complementary to the Dropped Downtube system, which integrates the front wheel fork, headtube, and frame to create a unified flow of air over the entire zone, then passing it back as cleanly as possible to the rear of the bike. This has a massive effect on drag reduction and watt savings over the long haul on the bike leg.

What both athletes and mechanics alike appreciate about the P3 design is that while it has the Future-Proof fully integrated internal cable system, it is actually fairly easy to set-up and maintain. Having the dual pivot caliper brakes in the standard road locations, and not hidden under the chainstays or inside the fork means accessibility is ideal, which makes for much easier travel and maintenance. The fork steerer tube has a standard 1 1/8" diameter which follows Cervelo's principle of the Evolved Steerer design for choosing the proper fork and headtube diameter for each style and model. The combination of aerodynamics and torsional requirements drive this decision making process. The P3's carbon aero seatpost has their true rail adjust system that allows you to establish your perfect bike-fit driven seattube angle with a massive 75mm of simple fore-aft adjustment.

Cervelo doesn't skimp on the useful triathlon-specific detail, as there a toptube boss set-up for a direct mount bag, case, or bottle, as well as a shielded downtube bottle mount, and a lonely single boss above the bottom bracket zone which was originally placed to hold a frame specific all-purpose box but now is used by creative folks for other options (think 3D printers).

Any cyclist or triathlete with a need for an aero event-driven design can benefit from the incredible legacy of Cervelo's aerodynamic design and engineering built into the 2018 Rim P3 Frameset. It is ideal for a those getting started, but just because you progress doesn't mean your bike will be inadequate in a year or two. That is because most aero gains in bike under the current rules and regulations are very slight. Investing in a great bike fit, proved aero wheelset, having the proper helmet, intelligent or coached use of a powermeter- all would have a greater impact on your performance. Once you start missing out on top 5's or wins by a second or two, then sure, a top shelf new frame might be worth the investment. But never sleep on a competitor riding a Cervelo P3, it will always be a competitive event platform. What more can you ask for?
